“The fact that a camera is a machine does not mean that photography is an entirely mechanical process. In my opinion, a camera is a machine only in the sense that, for example, a piano is a machine. Both are of little value in the hands of a person who does not know how to use them. Any child can strike notes on the piano and pick out a simple tune, but nobody would call this making music. And any inexperienced person can snap a picture, but a snapshot will not necessarily be a meaningful and interesting photograph. In order to produce good photographs, a photographer must know and be able to utilize the potentialities of his camera as a good pianist must know and be able to utilize the potentialities of the piano”
